Brazil Centre-South ethanol sales jump 23.91% in May first half

May 30, 2013 - The ethanol sales of Brazil's largest sugar cane producing region Centre-South increased 23.91% year-on-year in the first half of May 2013, to 920.9 milllion litres (243.3m gallons), data of the Brazilian sugarcane industry association (Unica) showed on Tuesday.
The production of ethanol in the first half of May reached 1.64 billion litres, a surge of 112%. From the beginning of the crop year on April 1 to May 16, the output hiked 146% year-on-year to 3.248 billion litres.
In the first half of May 2013, a total 56.47% of the processed sugar cane was transformed in ethanol, up from the 54.89% share in the same period last year.
According to the technical director of Unica, Antonio Rodrigues, the consumption of hydrous ethanol will continue rising in the next months as it is already more competitive than petrol (gasoline) in big part of the country.
