Brazil Eletrosul to install biogas power plant

Mar 15, 2013 - Eletrosul, a subsidiary of Brazil's state-owned power holding company Eletrobras (SAO:ELET6), yesterday announced it would install a biogas power generation plant with up to 400 kW capacity in the Itapiranga municipality of southern Santa Catarina state.
The venture, planned to receive investment of BRL 9.8 million (USD 4.9m/EUR 3.8m) over the next three years, will be supplied with biogas produced in 12 local pig farms.
When launched, the facility will be connected to the local power grid.
With this project, to be executed in partnership with six academic and scientific institutions, the company intends to carry out an in-depth research in the area of biomass utilisation for electricity generation in Brazil.
The research will strive to identify the best technique for channelling biogas from the farm properties to the powerhouse. The company will also study the installation of the biodegradation systems at the farms, seeking a more efficient way of processing waste in order to obtain biogas suitable for power generation, Eletrosul highlighted in the press release.
