Brazil has reached a new milestone in the solar energy sector by recently surpassing 45 GW of installed solar photovoltaic (PV) capacity.

The figure includes both large and small-scale plants. According to data from the local solar association Absolar, solar power now makes up 19% of the country's total energy mix.

The market has installed 30.7 GW across distributed generation (DG) systems, making solar the number one choice for self-consumption systems in Brazil. Currently, the technology is used in 99.9% of all on-site DG arrays in the country.

Large-scale solar power plants are responsible for the remaining 14.8 GW.

The rollout of solar energy across Brazil has brought in investments of BRL 211.7 billion (USD 37.3bn/EUR 34.6bn), creating around 1.4 million local jobs, Absolar noted.
