Brazil’s Ceara state government and the Netherlands have joined hands to boost green hydrogen production and establish a maritime corridor between ports in the two countries to facilitate export to Europe.

The green hydrogen corridor to be established between Brazil's Pecem Port and the Port of Rotterdam will create an end-to-end supply chain that includes hydrogen production at Pecem with delivery and distribution to the Port of Rotterdam. The clean fuel will be used to meet demand in the Netherlands and other European countries.

The creation of the corridor is supported by companies including AES Brasil, Casa dos Ventos, Nexway, Havenbedrijf Rotterdam, Fortescue, and EDP which also signed the pact with the Pecem port complex.

The green ports partnership provides support for Dutch companies to export and invest in Brazil and to assist Brazilian companies with investments and exports to the Netherlands.

Earlier this week, Ceara's state government also signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Voltalia to cooperate in the development of green hydrogen, green ammonia, and e-methanol projects, such as the structuring of a supply chain.

At present, Ceara is heading towards the milestone of 30 memorandums signed with companies interested in the production of green hydrogen. Of these, three have already advanced further – Fortescue, Casa dos Ventos and AES.

Overall, the state government estimates the green hydrogen projects will result in some USD 8 billion (EUR 7.3bn) in investments. Furthermore, Pecem plans to alone invest BRL 2.2 billion (USD 443.5m/EUR 405.7m) to provide the port terminal with infrastructure capable of housing the projects.
