Brazil seen to rank 10th in wind capacity ranking this year - report

Mar 5, 2013 - Brazil is on its way to rank 10th in installed wind power capacity in 2013, according to the president of Brazilian wind power generation association Abeeolica, Elbia Melo, cited by local energy news provider Jornal da Energia yesterday.

A recent ranking of the Global Wind Energy Council (GWEC) showed that at end-2012 Brazil had climbed to 15th from 20th after reaching 2.5 GW installed wind capacity.

Projections show that Brazil may achieve as much as 8.8 GW in 2017. This would translate into 5.5% of the country's total power generation capacity.

At present, the average price of Brazilian wind power stands at about BRL 119 per MWh (USD 60.44/EUR 46.34), while investment amount per megawatt installed has declined to BRL 3 million from BRL 6.5 million a few years ago, Jornal da Energia wrote.

Melo reportedly affirmed that Brazil currently has around 18 GW in wind projects ready to be developed.
