In the first 10 months of the year, the number of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) traded in Brazil has reached a total of 1.3 million, five times more than the number for all of last year.

The number exceeded expectations, according to the National Wind Energy Association (Abeeolica), which cited reports from Brazil's Totum Institute, local issuer of RECs in Brazil accredited by the world the International REC Standard (I-REC).

Abeeolica said that demand for RECs grows higher each day, in part due to the availability of I-REC and the RE100 initiative, in which companies commit to power 100% of their operations from renewable sources. Back in October, for example, Brazilian telecommunication company Vivo announced it will become 100% renewable before the end of this month, having agreed to purchase RECs.

Totum Institute expects that around 3 million RECs will be traded in 2019, Abeeolica noted.
