Brazilian cooperative Creral Cooperativa de Geracao de Energia e Desenvolvimento has started the commercial operation on a 1.44-MWp distributed generation (DG) solar farm, the first built in partnership with its members.

Creral invested BRL 6 million (USD 1m/EUR 990,000) in constructing the photovoltaic (PV) park in Rio Grande do Sul's Trindade do Sul municipality.

With 2,200 solar panels spread over a 2.5-hectare (61.7 acres) area, the solar plant can generate 2.3 million kWh per year. Creral said 110 members of the cooperative will benefit from the output. Specifically, the PV plant operates in the shared generation modality, which means the members will receive a monthly discount on their electrical bills proportionally to the energy quota they have acquired.

The operation and maintenance (O&M) services are to be handled by the cooperative, at no cost to members, until 2045.
