In the first eight months of the year, the number of Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) traded in Brazil has reached a total of 126,905, an increase of 18% over the previous year.

The number exceeded expectations, according to the National Wind Energy Association (Abeeolica), which cited reports from local media. Each certificate is equivalent to 1 MWh of electricity produced from renewable sources.

Currently, Brazil has 19 renewable energy parks capable of generating RECs, of which 15 are already registered in the International REC Standard (I-REC) system, according to Brazil's Totum Institute, one of the organisations that coordinates the renewable energy certification programme in the country.

Totum Institute expects that by the end of 2017 around 1,000,000 RECs will be traded and all Brazilian projects with RECs will migrate to the global I-REC standard by early 2018.
