Brazilian telecommunications company TIM Participacoes SA (BVMF:TIMS3) announced on Wednesday that 100% of its power consumption is now sourced from renewables.

The company achieved the milestone by purchasing renewable energy certificates, which guarantee that 1 MWh of power from renewables is injected into the national grid.

While the certificates helped, TIM also sources power from 46 clean energy plants located in 19 Brazilian states and the Federal District, and buys electricity on the free market.

TIM estimates that by the end of the year it will have 77 renewable plants, capable of generating 38.2 GWh per month. This is enough to power 19,000 antennas, the company said.

Of the total, 65 plants will be solar farms, followed by seven hydroelectric stations, three biogas and two natural gas facilities.

The telecom also bets on new antenna models directly powered by renewable energy sources. Recently, it installed the first antenna powered by wind energy in the state of Rio Grande do Norte.
