Brazil's Centre-South to import US wheat ethanol between sugar cane harvests

Oct 4, 2013 - Brazil's Centre-South, the country's largest ethanol producing region, is seen to import 1.5 billion litres (264.2m gallons) of wheat ethanol from the USA in the next period between sugar cane harvests, according to estimates of Brazilian consultancy Job Economia.

Despite that, the sugar cane harvest in Brazil in 2014/15 crop year should increase by 30 million tonnes from 2013/14, the consultancy noted.

Brazil, which produces mainly ethanol from sugar cane, is seen to crush 635.32 million tonnes of sugar cane in 2013/14, to end on March 31, 2014, producing 26.94 billion litres of ethanol, according to data released by a Sao Paulo sugar and ethanol consultancy in late August.

The latest data of the Brazilian sugarcane industry association (UNICA), published on September 24, shows that from the beginning of the current crop year to September 16, the crushed sugar cane totalled 406.26 million tones, an increase of 16.21% year-on-year. The ethanol production was 17.24 billion litres to September 16, of which 9.88 billion litres of hydrous ethanol and 7.36 billion litres of anhydrous.
