The government of Curitiba, capital of the Brazilian state of Parana, will allocate BRL 46 million (USD 9m/EUR 7.6m) for a 8-MWp solar portfolio.

In a meeting with the US ambassador, Todd Chapman, mayor Rafael Greca announced the disbursement last week. It covers the implementation of the "Caximba Solar Pyramid" and of solar installations on bus and train terminals in the city.

The bidding process for the installation of the solar arrays is expected to start before the end of the month, according to the local government. Together, the photovoltaic (PV) systems should generate annual savings of BRL 5.3 million for the town.

In addition to the reduction in the electricity bill, the solar installations will help Curitiba avoid the emission of more than 5,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) per year, the government noted.
