Brazil's Piaui state governor Rafael Fonteles has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with solar company Solatio Energia to develop a 4-GW solar power generation project.

Claimed to be the largest of its kind in the country, the new solar plant will power the ammonia production industry in Parnaiba city, the state government announced this week.

The solar facility will be located in the municipality of Bom Principio do Piaui and construction works are slated to begin in 2025.

Solatio has already been given the environmental go-ahead to produce 11.4 GW of green hydrogen and ammonia in Piaui, focused on supplying the European market. Throughout Brazil, the company is investing BRL 25 billion (USD 4.7bn/EUR 4.3bn) in solar energy.
