Brazil's Suzano secures contract for 50 MWa of biomass power supply

Brazilian pulp and paper producer Suzano SA (NYSE:SUZ) announced recently it has secured a supply contract for 50 average megawatts (MWa) of biomass power in Brazil’s latest energy tender.

The company has won a contract for the sale of energy in the regulated environment (CCEAR) with distribution concessionaires Cemig, Light SA and Coelba. It was awarded the deal at a tariff of BRL 315 (USD 66.2/EUR 61.8) per MWh, representing a total contract value of BRL 2.8 billion.

The supply period will run from January 2026 to December 2045.

Suzano will service the deal with a portion of the estimated surplus power generation of 180 MWa of a new plant in Ribas do Rio Pardo, Mato Grosso do Sul state. The so-called Cerrado project will use as fuel biomass derived from planted eucalyptus trees. The facility is set to start commercial operation in 2024.

Overall, Brazil awarded around 947.9 MW of renewable power supply contracts in the May 27 tender.
