Japanese vehicle parts manufacturer Bridgestone Corp (TYO:5108) has initiated the operation of rooftop solar systems with a combined capacity of 5.8 MW at two tyre production plants.

The photovoltaic (PV) arrays were installed atop the Shimonoseki and Kitakyushu factories in southern Japan, and now supply electricity under power purchase agreements (PPAs).

The systems will allow the manufacturer to offset around 2,700 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions per year. Together, they can generate some 6,070 MWh annually.

The two factories have been buying renewable energy to meet all of their consumption needs since 2021, Bridgestone said.

The group plans to have renewable sources accounting for more than 50% of its electricity consumption by the end of 2023 and 100% by 2030.
