The UK arm of Anheuser-Busch InBev (EBR:ABI) is looking to fuel production at its brewery in Magor, South Wales, with green hydrogen with the help of UK green hydrogen services provider Protium.

Budweiser Brewing Group UK&I and Protium will work together to set up infrastructure to produce over 20 MW of renewable energy and green hydrogen at the Magor site. The project is set to create the first brewery supplied with green hydrogen under one of the first hydrogen purchase agreements (HPAs) in the sector, Protium said on Tuesday.

The hydrogen will be produced at Protium’s hydrogen production base located close to the Magor site with electricity coming from existing wind and solar plants at the site of the brewery. Power from Protium’s own wind and solar parks will also be used. The hydrogen will be used to fuel the brewery’s production and heavy goods vehicles and forklift trucks used at Magor.

The hydrogen production facility will include a battery, hydrogen storage unit, and a hydrogen refuelling station. It will become operational by 2024.

The initiative is aligned with Budweiser Brewing Group’s sustainability goals and Anheuser-Busch’s plan to brew its beers globally with 100% renewable electricity by 2025. The company is already using 100% renewables electricity at the Magor brewery thanks to an on-site wind turbine and solar farms.
