Bui Power Authority to add 250 MW of solar in Ghana - report

July 3 (Renewables Now) – Ghana's Bui Power Authority has undertaken a project for the installation of a 250-MW solar complex under a plan to boost the country’s power output, the Daily Graphic said on Wednesday citing the company's CEO.

The capacity will be added in phases, the first one of which envisages the construction of a 50-MW plant, CEO Fred Oware told the newspaper. The photovoltaic (PV) facility is expected to become operational by the second quarter of 2018. Construction works are slated to begin this month.

The Bui Power Authority, which operates the Bui hydropower station, has awarded 15-year build, operate and transfer (BOT) contracts to private sector partners to finance the scheme.

The remaining 200-MW capacity will be installed in four separate stages of 50 MW each and will include storage, according to the report. It will be accommodated in the swtich yard of the 400-MW hydropower plant.

The project is part of the Bui Power Authority’s programme called Bui hydro-solar hybrid scheme, aimed at diversifying its power generation mix through the addition of solar power. It is also in line with the government’s goal for a 10% renewables share of the country’s total power by 2030.
