Large-scale energy storage firm Lion Storage announced today that it has obtained a building permit for its project to deploy a 364-MW/1,457-MWh battery energy storage system (BESS) in the Netherlands.

The grid-connected facility, dubbed Project Mufasa, will be built in the North Sea port of Vlissingen port. This BESS with a four-hour duration will be situated near large-scale hydrogen and offshore wind projects under development. It will have direct access to the high-voltage grid of transmission system operator TenneT Holding BV.

The commercial operation date for the site, which Lion Storage presented earlier this year, is targeted for 2026.

“As the Dutch energy transition efforts accelerate, the demand for flexibility is growing also. The challenges to our electricity grid have never been greater. Without adequate energy storage, the Netherlands risks increasing grid instability and security of supply risks,” Lion Storage noted in a social media post on Monday.
