Bulgaria's NEK opens tender for new turbines at pumped storage plant
Sep 18, 2024 13:50 CESTThe Bulgarian Ministry of Energy is seeking public comments on a proposed tender programme that could subsidise the development of at least 570 MW of renewable energy and 150 MW of battery storage projects.
The public consultation concerns the design of what will be the Balkan country’s first tender for renewable energy capacity with an integrated storage component. It will seek to disburse BGN 265.4 million (USD 142.9m/EUR 133.5m) through a grant programme under the national Recovery & Resilience Plan (RRP) that will finance the battery component of the winning schemes, the government announced on Friday.
The proposal will be open to public comments until November 6.
Specifically, the financial support will be available to solar photovoltaic (PV) and wind projects with batteries. Grants are proposed to be awarded competitively to cover up to 50% of the cost of the storage component, the capacity of which should be between 30% and 50% of the co-located renewable energy project.
Companies from all sectors will be able to apply, except for those in the agriculture, forestry and fishery industries.
The proposed programme is aligned with Bulgaria’s efforts to make renewables account for 27% of its gross final energy consumption by 2030. Under the scheme, the government aims to facilitate the deployment of 1,425 MW of renewable energy and 350 MW of battery storage capacity.
