Bulgaria to build 10 hydrogen filling stations by 2025 - transport min

Bulgaria's government has approved a national programme for the development of alternative fuel markets, which envisages the construction of 10 hydrogen filling stations by 2025, the transport ministry said.

Potential places for installation of hydrogen filling stations are being explored, with the first one most likely to be installed in the city of Burgas, on the Black Sea coast, the ministry said in a statement over the weekend.

Currently, Bulgaria has no hydrogen filling stations on its territory.

The works on the modification of the first Bulgarian passenger ship to be powered by a hydrogen engine are in progress, Bulgaria's deputy transport minister Angel Popov said in the statement.

Hydrogen, which is produced from renewable sources, such as wind or solar power could power fuel cells which could be installed in motor vehicles. The excess energy can be stored in the form of hydrogen for use in the event of a shortage of solar energy or wind power.
