Bulgaria's NEK opens tender for new turbines at pumped storage plant
Sep 18, 2024 13:50 CESTBulgaria's government on Wednesday approved a national action plan for the development of renewable energy sources until 2020, the energy ministry said.
The plan relates to the implementation of the European Union directives on renewables, energy efficiency and climate change. Under these requirements, renewable energy sources should cover 16% of Bulgaria's gross energy consumption by 2020.
Renewable energy sources should reach a 20.8% share in Bulgaria's electricity consumption, a 23.8% share in the consumption of heating and cooling energy and 10.8% in transport under the action plan, the energy ministry said on its website.
To meet this target, the country would need to have 5,189 megawatts (MW) of installed renewable energy capacity that would generate 7,604 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electricity per year. Hydropower plants should generate 63% of the total, followed by wind farms with 28%, solar power plants with 6.0% and biomass with 3.0%.
