Bulgaria's NEK opens tender for new turbines at pumped storage plant
Sep 18, 2024 13:50 CESTAES Bulgaria, a unit of U.S.-based energy conglomerate AES Corporation, said on Friday that its thermal power plant (TPP) AES Galabovo recorded an all-time high electricity production of 345,029 MWh in May, up 38% year-on-year.
This is the highest amount of electricity produced at the coal-fired plant plant since the start of commercial operation in 2011, AES Bulgaria said in a press release.
AES Bulgaria's two units, coal-fired AES Galabovo and St. Nikola wind farm, together produced 11% of all electricity consumed in Bulgaria in May, the company said.
The wind farm alone produced close to 15,500 MWh last month, or enough to meet the needs of around 45,000 Bulgarian households.
AES Galabovo uses only locally-mined lignite coal, having bought in 2021 nearly 21% of the lignite extracted from the state-owned Maritza East Mines, AES said.
