Bulgarian electricity system operator (ESO) said on Monday that the country's electricity production grew by some 4% to slightly more than 49 billion KWh in 2015.

Electricity consumption rose by 2.0% in 2015, reaching 37.88 billion KWh, ESO said in a press release on its website.

Exports rose by 11% to 10.5 billion KWh in 2015 as the bulk went to Turkey and Greece.

The electricity production from hydro power plants (HPP) was over 6 billion KWh, which is almost 20% higher compared to 2014 and it represents nearly 12% of the total energy produced in the country.

The electricity output of thermal power plants of the Maritsa East basin rose by 11%.

Solar and wind farms increased their output by about 9%.

The output of Bulgaria's sole nuclear power plant Kolzoduy dropped by 3%.
