Burgenland Energie advances 164-MW agri-PV project in Austria

Austrian electric utility Burgenland Energie AG said on Monday that it is making progress on a 164-MW agri-PV power plant, which is expected to be the largest facility of its kind in Austria when completed.

Since the installation works began in April 2024, around 210,000 panels have been mounted, representing 80% of all panels. The facility is expected to become operational at the start of 2025.

The power station, located in the district of Neusiedl am See in Burgenland, will cover an area of 180 hectares.

Unlike conventional PV installations, the panels will not be fixed. They will be moveable via a dedicated tracker system to follow the sun. The approach can increase production by 10% compared to standard fixed installations, the company said.

The solar system will be combined with Austria’s largest wind farm in Andau, forming a hybrid agri-PV-wind park.

The project is in line with Burgenland’s goal to achieve energy independence by 2030. Currently, the federal state has reached 60% independence, according to the statement.
