Burkina Faso 22-MW PV project to get EUR 25m financing from EU

Nov 21, 2012 - A new 22-MW photovoltaic (PV) plant in Zagtouli, Burkina Faso, will receive EU financing of EUR 25 million (USD 31.9m), EU Commissioner for Development Andris Piebalgs announced this week.

The European Investment Bank (EIB) and the French Development Agency (AFD) will pitch in another EUR 38 million.

The plant, scheduled to start operations in late 2013, will have 96,000 solar panels and will generate 32 GWh of power annually. This corresponds to some 6% of Burkina Faso's current power production and will be enough to supply 40,000 people.

Burkina Faso, where only 15% of the population has access to electricity, is expected to greatly benefit from the project.
