Canada invests CAD 4.6m in coast-to-coast EV charging network

Canada’s ministry of natural resources announced an investment of CAD 4.6 million (USD 3.5m/EUR 3.1m) in support of the construction of a coast-to-coast fast-charging network for electric vehicles (EVs).

Per the announcement on Thursday, the funds will go for 92 EV fast chargers at stations of Canadian oil-and-gas company Petro-Canada. One station in Stewiacke, Nova Scotia, has already been completed.

The ministry said that more than 50 Petro-Canada locations would feature two charging units on site.

The initiative is part of the Canadian government’s plan to invest CAD 182.5 million in a coast-to-coast charging network for EVs and other zero- and low-carbon projects. This year will see more than 500 fast charging stations built or in the works, with hundreds more expected over the next two years.

A further CAD 130 million in the 2019 budget is being allocated for charging infrastructure, and the government offering a new incentive of up to CAD 5,000 for Canadians who buy or lease a zero-emission vehicle.
