Energir attracts USD-425m investment for decarbonisation strategy
Sep 06, 2024 16:02 CESTThe Mohawk Council of Kahnawa:ke, a Canadian Mohawk community, and utility company Hydro-Quebec have signed agreements to establish joint ownership of a 58-kilometre (36 miles) transmission line that will deliver renewable energy from Quebec to New York City, a press release said on Thursday.
The Hertel–New York Interconnection Line will be a 400-kV underground transmission line running from the Hertel substation in La Prairie, Quebec, to the Canada-US border. From there, it will link up with a separate transmission line in New York State.
Once commissioned in 2026, the Hertel Line will carry 1,250 MW of renewable energy, mainly hydro, to the city of New York, delivering enough electricity to power one million homes.
The utility and the Mohawk Council of Kahnawa:ke will be co-owners of the Canada portion of the line through their Horizon Kahnawa:ke Hydro-Quebec Limited Partnership, Hydro-Quebec said.
"This agreement is especially remarkable because it will be the first time that Hydro-Quebec shares ownership of its transmission infrastructure with a third party and a First Nation community," said Grand Chief Kahsennenhawe Sky-Deer.
Construction of the Champlain Hudson Power Express, which is part of the transmission line on the US side of the border, began in late 2022.
