Canadian Solar equips 4-MW PV park in US Virgin Islands

Aug 6, 2014 - Canadian Solar Inc (NASDAQ:CSIQ) said Tuesday it had supplied 4 MW of its polycrystalline solar modules for a photovoltaic (PV) plant in the US Virgin Islands (USVI).

The 14,400 modules will power the Spanish Town Estate facility on the island of St Croix. The projects was acquired by US utility NRG Energy Inc (NYSE:NRG) in July from a unit of Japanese diversified manufacturer Toshiba Corp (TYO:6502). After the sale, Toshiba International Corp (TIC) remained the engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contractor.

The solar farm has a 25-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with the USVI Water and Power Authority (WAPA). Construction of the park kicked off in April. Once operational, it is expected to generate enough electricity to power more than 1,500 local households.

USVI aims to cut the consumption of energy generated from fossil fuels by 60% within the next 10 years.

Canadian Solar is engaged in the production of solar modules and other products, mainly in China, as well as in the installation of solar power plants globally. It has more than 7 GW of PV modules installed worldwide.
