Cape Verde to launch four wind farms by end-2011 - report

(ADPnews) - Jun 23, 2011 - Four wind farms will come on stream in Cape Verde by the end of 2011, Cape Verde's director-general for Energy, Abraao Lopes, was quoted as saying by Portuguese daily Oje yesterday.

The units, which are currently under construction, will have a total installed capacity of 28 MW.

The project has a budget of EUR 65 million (USD 92.7m) and it will allow a EUR 12 million reduction of the spending on fuels.

A 10-MW wind farm is being installed on the Santiago island, other 8 MW are being built on Sal, while Sao Vicente and Boa Vista will host 6-MW and 4-MW facilities, respectively.

The installation works are being carried out by wind power operator Cabeolica, which resulted from a public-private partnership between Cape Verde's government, the national power and water utility Electra and InfraCo, a corporate entity of international donors, among which the World Bank.

After all farms start operations, renewable energy will achieve a 25% share in the total power output of Cape Verde.

Lopes also stressed that the facilities will help avoid the emissions of more than 12,000 tonnes of CO2 a year.
