Canadian power producer Capital Power Corp (TSE:CPX) has sealed a power off-take deal with compatriot Shaw Communications Inc that will see the telecoms group get electricity from a 75-MW solar park in Alberta.

Under the 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA), Shaw will procure power from roughly 30 MW of the solar farm’s capacity, or 38% of its generation, Capital Power said on Tuesday. The deal is tied to the output of the Clydesdale photovoltaic (PV) park.

The telecommunication services provider will receive all greenhouse gas offsets and environmental attributes related to its share of the solar farm’s output.

Located in the Municipal District of Taber, Clydesdale Solar was switched on in December 2022. It is equipped with 90,237 Longi PV panels that are expected to produce around 170 GWh of green power annually. With the new PPA, about 90% of the plant’s generation is contracted for 15 years. In April 2021, Ontario-based Labatt Brewing Company committed to buying 51% of the overall electricity through a virtual PPA.

Clydesdale Solar is Capital Power’s second solar park that enters operations in Alberta, along with the 41-MW Strathmore plant, which was commissioned in March 2022.
