Australia’s Carnegie Wave Energy (ASX:CWE) has deployed and commissioned a wave monitoring buoy off the south coast of Mauritius as it looks to assess the feasibility of installing its CETO device there.

The move is part of a cooperation agreement between Carnegie and the Mauritius Research Council (MRC). The work was conducted in conjunction with Australia’s High Commissioner to Mauritius and the University of Western Australia.

Under the collaboration pact, Carnegie is to create a renewables roadmap for Mauritius, assess the local wave energy resource, site conditions and priority sites for commercial CETO wave energy devices, and design a decentralised microgrid for the Island of Rodrigues.

The wave buoy, which was deployed under work package two, will be gathering data for a minimum period of six months.

In December, the project received AUD 800,000 (USD 599,000/EUR 538,000) in financing from the government of Australia and Mauritius. The total cost of the scheme is estimated at AUD 990,000. The sum not covered by the government financing will be invested by Carnegie itself.
