Australian wave energy developer Carnegie Wave Energy Ltd (ASX:CWE) said Friday it will explore potential commercial wave power and microgrid projects in the Seychelles as part of a deal with the local government.

The company signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Republic of Seychelles during the Indian Ocean Rim Association Ministerial Blue Economy Conference, which was held in Mauritius.

Under the terms of the deal, the Aussie firm will look into the prospect of building wave energy plants for commercial use across the archipelago and will seek potential microgrid opportunities there, so as to easily integrate its wave power systems into the existing power infrastructure.

Remote islands seeking to reduce their dependance on diesel imports are an attractive destination for Carnegie’s CETO technology, COO Greg Allen noted. The MoU in the Seychelles is an important step for the commercialisation of wave power outside mainland markets such as the UK and Europe, he added.
