Brazilian renewable energy developer Casa dos Ventos will supply wind and solar power to support a green hydrogen facility that will in turn fuel a fertiliser plant owned by Swiss company Atlas Agro.

The two companies have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU), under which Casa dos Ventos will supply 300 average megawatts (MWa) of renewable energy to the facility located in Uberaba, Minas Gerais state. The plant will produce green ammonium nitrate, a crucial component for lowering carbon emissions in agricultural practices, Casa dos Ventos said on Monday.

The project is expected to start commercial operations in 2028 with the capacity to produce about 530,000 tonnes of fertilisers per year.

Currently, global nitrogen fertiliser production primarily relies on natural gas, making this initiative a more sustainable alternative and a significant move towards reducing Brazil's dependence on imports, Casa dos Ventos noted.
