Castrol, the BP Plc (LON:BP)-owned lubricant brand, has announced a joint venture with a specialist in wind turbine predictive maintenance, the InSight unit of UK company Romax Technology.

Castrol said on Tuesday it is taking a controlling stake in Romax InSight, which provides solutions that monitor the condition of wind turbines and predict breakdowns, potentially reducing maintenance costs by up to 30%. The lubrication and maintenance of a wind turbine's expensive gearbox is important for its performance and reliability, Castrol noted.

The joint venture will combine Castrol's global presence and expertise in wind turbine lubrication with Romax Insight's expertise in predictive maintenance, software and data analytics for wind turbines.

"The aim of Romax InSight is to combine our deep understanding of design and operation of wind turbines with advanced data analytics to provide practical solutions that reduce operations and maintenance costs," Romax Technology chief executive Andy Poon said and added that Castrol is a partner that can provide a platform for growth.
