Colombian power company Celsia announced on Monday that it has begun construction on a 59.7-MW solar farm complex in a village in northeastern Colombia, working to add three more plants to the platform it shares with Cubico Sustainable Investments.

The power plant complex in the village of La Mesa, Cesar Department, will consist of three 19.9-MW solar farms, each equipped with 70,000 modules.

The construction of the plants is expected to take between ten to 12 months and will employ around 300 people during its peak, Celsia said.

The project required consultation and approval of four indigenous communities living on the border of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta mountain before construction could begin.

Celsia is promoting this project through its platform C2 Energia, a partnership set up with London-based renewables investor Cubico for the purpose of developing solar farms greater than 8 MW across Colombia.

The company says its alliance with Cubico has so far installed 17 solar farms. Eight of these, totalling 113.7 MW, supply electricity to industrial customers, while the remaining 186.4 MW inject power into the national grid.

Celsia expects to close the current year with 350 MW of installed solar generation capacity through 8-MW-plus farms in Colombia.
