Colombian power company Celsia said on Tuesday that it has been awarded a contract in a public tender to construct the Carreto 500 kV substation in the Bolivar department and approximately one kilometre (0.62 miles) of double-circuit network.

The public tender had participation from six national and international bidders, according to the company. Celsia’s bid was chosen due to its compliance with the technical requirements set by Colombia’s national government, as well as its competitive pricing, said Julian Cadavid, Celsia's Transmission and Distribution leader.

The Carreto project will including building transmission lines connected to the Chinu-Sabanalarga 500 kV circuit, and adding a substation with expansion capacity for future connections.

The project will be located in the municipality of San Juan Nepomuceno in Bolivar.

Celsia expects the infrastructure to be in service by 2027.

“This project is of great importance to provide reliability to the energy service in the Caribbean. It expands the capacity of the coastal transmission system, especially for the south of Bolivar, and will accommodate new large solar farm connections. It will also improve the reliability of power supply for local people,” added Cadavid.

Celsia operates 17 transmission substations and 274 km of networks in Colombia, according to its website. As a power producer, it generates electricity mainly from hydro, but it also has 300 MWp of solar power capacity in the home market.
