Cement group GCC inks 15-year wind PPA in US

Mexican cement manufacturer Grupo Cementos de Chihuahua SAB de CV (BMV:GCC) will use wind power to cover around 50% of the electricity consumption at its plant in Rapid City in the US state of South Dakota.

The company has signed a 15-year fixed-price power purchase agreement (PPA) with an unnamed US-based energy provider to secure the supply. The move will enable the Rapid City cement plant to avoid releasing around 50,000 metric tonnes of CO2 emissions per year, Grupo Cements has said.

The PPA is expected to come into force in the first quarter of 2021.

The Chihuahua-based cement group, which runs operations in the US, Mexico and Canada, last year signed a long-term off-take deal to power up its Odessa, Texas, factory entirely with renewables. Another PPA in December 2019 will enable a GCC factory in Juarez to draw around 20% of its power from solar, according to earlier announcements.
