Asian data centre operator GDS will off-take solar power for a data centre facility in Malaysia under a virtual power purchase agreement (PPA) with local solar power producer Cenergi SEA Berhad (Cenergi).

The 21-year contract is tied to 22.5 MW of the generation of a 30-MW photovoltaic (PV) to be built by Cenergi in the state of Kedah, the companies said on Tuesday.

The solar farm is schedulled for commissioning by the closing quarter of next year and its operations set to benefit GDS’ Nusajaya Tech Park Data Center Campus in the southern Malaysian state of Johor. The tech group estimates that up to 38,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions annually will be mitigated thanks to the arrangement.

GDS said the partnership with Cenergi empowers it to claim Renewable Energy Credits (RECs) that will enable it to lower its greenhouse gas emissions and support its target of achieving net zero operations by 2030.
