UK energy company Centrica plc (LON:CNA) said on Monday that it has reached an agreement with Swiss renewables developer Fu-Gen AG to acquire up to nine battery energy storage system (BESS) projects in Sweden with a total capacity of over 100 MW.

Financial and other details were not disclosed.

The projects will be acquired in ready-to-build stage. The batteries are set to be deployed in the SE3 region, which includes Stockholm and surrounding areas, but they will provide grid flexibility and ancillary services across the wider Nordic electricity market, Centrica said.

The company expects the first BESS facilities to become operational in 2026.

“The acquisition strengthens our position as a leading provider of flexibility energy solutions across Europe,” stated Ulrika Wising, managing director of Centrica Power. “Battery storage is a key enabler for the transition to a low-carbon energy system, and we look forward to working with Fu-Gen to deliver these projects and to support the integration of more renewable energy in Sweden."
