Centrica to manage production at Danish green H2 plant

UK energy company Centrica plc (LON:CNA) will provide balancing and optimisation services for a green hydrogen plant, which European Energy A/S just opened at Port Esbjerg in Denmark.

The contract calls for Centrica to manage power production from co-located wind turbines and designate excess generation to green hydrogen production, the British firm said on Monday. Its announcement follows the inauguration of the 3-MW electrolyser in Made, Esbjerg, which European Energy plans to expand with two additional electrolysers to reach a total capacity of 12 MW.

The green hydrogen complex will source electricity from two wind turbines, part of the 16-MW Made Wind Turbine Test Center.

Initially, European Energy expects to produce roughly 270 tonnes of hydrogen per year, which will be supplied to the Port Esbjerg and excess heat will be used by local heating utility DIN Forsynin. When all three electrolyser units are brought into operation, the complex will be able to produce about 1,500 tonnes of green hydrogen annually.
