CF Industries Holdings Inc (NYSE:CF) has contracted ThyssenKrupp AG (ETR:TKA) to deliver a 20-MW alkaline water electrolysis plant for the production of hydrogen as part of a green ammonia project in Louisiana.

The US-based producer of ammonia and agricultural fertilisers has signed an engineering and procurement deal under which ThyssenKrupp will build the facility at the existing manufacturing complex in Donaldsonville.

CF Industries plans to integrate the hydrogen produced on-site into existing ammonia synthesis loops. As a result, the site will be able to produce about 20,000 tonnes of green ammonia per year. The electrolysers delivered by ThyssenKrupp will run on 100% renewable energy.

According to CF Industries’ president and CEO Tony Will, this will be the first commercial-scale green ammonia project in North America. The start of construction is planned for the second half of this year, while completion is scheduled for 2023.

The modular design of ThyssenKrupp’s electrolysers will enable future expansions.
