Chile's environmental authorities have approved a 9.9-MW wind project of Empresa Electrica El Arrebol SpA, set up by construction firm Besalco SA (SCL:BESALCO).

The environmental licence, published on Monday, allows for the installation of three 3.3-MW turbines north of Lebu city, Biobio region.

The wind farm will be built in an area close to port infrastructure and distribution lines during a nine-month period and will produce 35 GWh a year. The company plans to invest USD 20 million (EUR 18.5m) and operate the plant 25 years.

Besalco has been working on a series of small hydroelectric projects to provide some 180 MW for the country's central power system from the Maule and Araucania regions.
