Chilean power transmission infrastructure operator Transelec announced on Thursday that it has closed the purchase of batteries and conversion equipment for a 105-MW battery energy storage system (BESS) project it is co-developing in northern Chile in partnership with energy firm Copec.

The company signed a purchase agreement and order to proceed with China’s Shenzhen Clou Electronics Co Ltd (SHE:002121), securing over 130 20-foot containers with a storage capacity of 420 MWh. The system is liquid-cooled and known for its high level of safety and energy density, Transelec said.

The first shipment is scheduled for July 2025, with the BESS expected to be operational in early 2026.

The batteries will be paired with the existing 123-MWp solar farm, called Granja Solar, in the Tarapaca region. Copec acquired the solar farm in April this year and later signed a partnership agreement with Transelec to develop the Granja Solar BESS under the build, own, operate and transfer (BOOT) model.

Transelec will operate and manage the batteries for 20 years and transfer the system to Copec at the end of the term.
