Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) and China Steel Corporation (TPE:2002) have generated first power from their 300-MW Zhong Neng wind farm off the coast of Changhua County in Taiwanese waters.

The milestone is a significant step towards the on-schedule completion of the project later in 2024, CIP said on Wednesday. The Danish infrastructure investor holds a 49% stake in the project through its fund Copenhagen Infrastructure IV, while its joint venture partner China Steel holds the controlling 51%.

The Zhong Neng park is located next to CIP’s majority-owned Changfang-Xidao offshore complex, which was officially opened last month. Grid allocation for Zhong Neng was obtained in 2018 and a 20-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Taiwan Power Company was signed a year later. The project’s local content plan was approved by the Taiwanese government in November 2019.

The wind farm’s first turbine was erected in May. Work is underway to install the remaining Vestas 174-9.6MW machines in the third quarter of 2024. The 31-turbine park is planned to be hooked to the grid by the end of this year, with its annual output expected to be enough to supply about 300,000 local homes annually.
