CIP joins Danish shipping, agri-sector on offshore wind-to-ammonia project

Danish fund manager Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners (CIP) said it has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with several companies in the agriculture and shipping sectors to realise a power-to-X project in the home country.

The proposed facility will be located in the Danish west coast town of Esbjerg, where it will convert offshore wind power to green ammonia via 1 GW of electrolysis.

CIP is joined by Arla Foods amba, Danish Crown AmbA and DLG, Danish dairy, meat and crop producers, respectively, representing the agricultural side of the project. The collaboration also includes shipping companies AP Moeller Maersk A/S (CPH:MAERSK-B) and Dfds AS (CPH:DFDS).

The agriculture sector will benefit from the CO2-free green fertiliser from the new plant, while the shipping industry will use the green fuel, CIP said.

Danish pension fund PensionDanmark is announced as being among the potential investors in the Esbjerg project and in CIP’s new Energy Transition Fund, through which CIP will invest in power-to-X and other next-generation renewables.

The future facility will have the capacity to replace all imported fertilisers in Denmark, according to CIP. The excess heat will be used to supply heating for about one third of the households in Esbjerg.

The facility is expected to start operations in 2026, DFDS said in a separate statement.
