CMIC Ocean En-Tech Holding Co Ltd (HKG:0206) on Wednesday said its wholly owned subsidiary TSC Offshore Corp has signed a memorandum of understanding with Barcelona-based engineering and vessel design office Offshoretronic SL to jointly develop and commercialise a solution for installing monopiles for offshore wind turbines.

The tilting and lifting beam plus roll-on concept has been designed by Offshoretronic. The solution is designed to be installed on a jack-up platform. It has been showcased in a concept vessel called Vitruvian, which is capable of transporting and installing monopiles weighing up to 5,000 tonnes. Monopiles with such a weight and 100-130 metres length will be needed for the next generation of offshore wind turbines of 15-20 MW that are expected to enter the market in 2024-2030, the company noted.

Removing the dependency on large heavy-lift cranes, the solution will reduce costs and time required, as well as lower operational risks during loading in port, up-ending, lifting and installation offshore, according to the announcement.

CMIC manufactures equipment for the offshore and energy industry and has recently expanded into the hydrogen sector.
