Codelco calls auction for renewable energy credits

Jul 30, 2012 - Chilean state-run copper producer Codelco on Friday called an auction to purchase renewable energy certificates equal to at least 180 GWh a year as of 2013.
Bidders can compete with operating power plants or projects scheduled to operate from October 2012. They can apply for pre-selection by August 31, while the auction is expected to close by the end of 2012.
In Chile, the law obliges the power generators to prove that 5% of the consumed electricity represents renewable energy. Although the requirement concerns the generators, it ultimately affects their major customers such as Codelco, the company said.
As for own renewable energy projects, Codelco is studying the construction of a wind farm near the Calama city in northern Chile. The company reminded that its Chuquicamata division already uses a photovoltaic capacity of 1 MW, operated by Spanish company Solarpack, while the Gaby mine will soon use solar energy for water heating.
