Cogenra Solar installs solar cogeneration system on InterContinental hotel in El Salvador

Jul 10, 2012 - US distributed solar cogeneration specialist Cogenra Solar today said it had installed a 122-kW solar cogeneration system on the roof of InterContinental Hotels Group's (LON:IHG) Hotel Real InterContinental in El Salvador.

Cogenra Solar collaborated with US on-site clean energy solutions provider THINKnrg in the installation of the rooftop system, which includes 48 modules. According to Cogenra Solar, the facility will generate some 24,000 kWh of electricity and reduce the hotel's hot water power consumption by 120,000 kWh a year, thus saving a total of 174 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions each year. It will produce some 16,000 litres of hot water a day.

The hotel is the first in the world to use solar cogeneration for power and heat on demand. The solar cogeneration system is a pilot project for InterContinental Hotels Group's hotels in Central America where it plans to install a number of such systems.
