Chilean utility Colbun SA has energised the first turbines at its 816-MW Horizonte wind farm in northern Chile, it said.

A group of eight wind turbines were energised in May. According to Colbun, they have contributed 1.3 GWh to the grid since May 13.

Horizonte will feature a total of 140 Enercon turbines. The project is over 80% complete, with 81 turbines installed so far, Colbun said.

At full capacity, the whole wind farm will be capable of generating 2,450 GWh of electricity annually.

The Horizonte wind farm is situated in the Atacama Desert at a site that Colbun secured under a concession in a public tender organised by the Chilean ministry of national assets.

Colbun hopes to expand the wind farm by 180 MW with the addition of 24 new turbines of up to 7.5 MW. The utility submitted the environmental impact assessment for the proposed expansion in March 2024.
