Collahuasi's renewable energy tender may be followed by other miners - report

(ADPnews) - Jun 7, 2011 - The tender for renewable energy supplies announced by Chilean miner Collahuasi could speed up the other miners' support for renewable energy projects, local analysts told daily Diario Financiero.
The tender does not predetermine the type of renewable energy, therefore the market will determine what type of energy is the most suitable one, the daily said. Solar and wind energy would be the most suitable, considering Collahuasi's short- and medium-term needs, while geothermal energy could be suitable in the long term, according to energy expert Juan Carlos Olmedo.
Reportedly, Collahuasi seeks clean supplies in order to comply with local regulations and reduce its carbon footprint, which matters in the external market.
Collahuasi launched the pre-qualification process for the tender at the end of last month, seeking a total 30 GWh a year.
