Conergy announced on Tuesday it will retain a 28-MW solar portfolio built by it in the US state of North Carolina as part of a plan to become an independent power producer (IPP) in the Americas.

The German downstream solar firm said in a statement it is making a strategic move into selective asset ownership. The company has completed five ground-mounted solar arrays earlier this month, which it intends to keep. The electricity generated by them will be sold to local utility Duke Energy Corp (NYSE:DUK) under a 15-year offtake deal.

Also today, the company announced that Yann Brandt, the former head of Global Marketing & PR at Conergy, will now take the role of Region Head of The Americas. He will take responsibility for the firm’s activities in North, Central and South America, as well as in the Caribbean.

Overall, Conergy has built over 1 GW of solar plants in 16 countries and has operations and maintenance (O&M) deals for over 500 MW of assets.
